The Potential Audiences for Short Films

There is a significant difference between audience of Short Films and audiences of Main Stream films. The audiences are split into two main groups called the unemployed students looking at competition, ideas or inspiration or those who are already known and grounded in the industry. The unemployed tend to watch them because they are free and they can watch several which will fill up their day interested in a variety of short stories and may also come across them on the internet when browsing through websites. The audience who is already successful in the industry may look at a number of short films to see if there's any great talent, story-lines or potential in any of the cast or directors so see if its able to a full length feature film. They would come across them through word or mouth or recommendation from other people within the industry advising them to watch a particular short film as they will be too busy to browse and look through the internet at all of the short films available.
The audience also depends on the film and purpose of the film for example a film may be targeted at schools, young people and try to get a message to them meaning the audience would be teenagers or children being educated from the footage. A film may be shown to them if they are studying film or media in school for analysis reasons only meaning they would watch a number of varied ones shown by their teacher. Some short films are made to shock or effect the audience in a dramatic and shocking way changing/influencing their views on something and making them see something in a different way or form.
Institutional implications for short films in terms of funding and distribution may affect audience as a short film will not have the funds or capability of advertising the film out to a wider target market audience and the audience has to look for short films in order to watch them which most people do not have the time for and are not aware that there are short films out there available for them to watch for free. The change of new media has widened the audience for short films and made more people able and accessible to watch short films in the comfort of their own home or wherever they are making short films more popular and attractive to watch.
We will base our
target market audience on the age group that has most access to the internet and is more familiar with browsing the web comfortably and easily. The target audience we have chosen for our short film is 16-18 as we know that the film we make will be attracted to them as we are in this age range so we will be able to identify if the audience will enjoy the film or not.
