What is the purpose of a short film?

There are three main purposes for a short film and they differ greatly in comparison to purposes of a mainstream film. The 1st purpose of a short film is for emerging directors to promote themselves and get their names known in the industry. Short films are used as a stepping stone to show their unique skills while gaining experience. These films would be entered into the film festivals/competitions, which are seen by   actors and directors. With the growth of the internet it has allowed this purpose to be completed more easily as things go viral. For example, Ataque de Panico was created by Fede Alvares who used his own simple C.G.I effects. The film went viral and was watched by many, including the director: Sam Raimi who offered a $30 million budget to direct a film, alongside many other brilliant offers. This example shows how social networking sites are able to promote short films to great extents.

The second purpose of a short film is to teach the audience something. To communicate a message and set up a discussion or be a trigger film. A great example of this is Gravity (2004), as the themes dealt with in short films are contemporary issues, they are used in institutions like schools to teach 'youth' about issues like multiculturalism crime etc. If it sets up a discussion, people are able to hear different judgements and views. , E.g. Gravity. As the themes dealt with in a Short Film are contemporary issues, they are used in institutions like schools to teach the ’Youth’ about issues like multiculturalism, crime etc. If it sets up a discussion, then people are more able to hear different judgements and views. For example ‘Cherries’ deals with war and male aggression, this could be shown to students in YR10 and over, and would be very effective as they could relate to it. Unlike feature films, which have archetypal characters and just ‘happy endings’, Short Films are able to incorporate current affairs, helping the people of today’s society.

The final purpose of a Short Film is to experiment, try new things as an aspiring actor. The film represents the directors’ ability and artistic expression. With a mainstream film like Harry Potter, it would have set conventions like a resolved equilibrium (defeating the bad demons), with closure/resolution within the narrative unlike a Short Film which would break the normal conventions, E.g. Break the fourth wall, which wouldn’t be seen in mainstream and doesn’t conform. Many established film directors use short films to present ideas for a mainstream film they would like to do and Neil Blomkamp did exactly that with ‘Alive in Joburg’ that was turned into ‘District 9’. The experimenting with initial ideas and possible elements like Special effects can be seen on screen to see the potential future of the film.
